Daily Actions

Day 1

My daily action will be to do more collaborative learning with my students. I enjoyed the clock partner's activity and I will definitely be using it in my class from now on. It encourages students to work with other students, not friends or table mates, and can ignite fresh and new ideas when they work with new peers.

Day 2

My daily action will be to give more feedback to my fellow teachers. It was highlighted to me in the session that we as teachers hardly give feedback to each other and this could be due to not having enough time or perhaps we are too scared to share our thoughts and opinions of others teaching. Although, I think it could be beneficial to know how you're doing as a teacher from another teacher's perspective. From today onward, where I can, I will try to give my honest feedback, constructive criticism or praise to teachers in my school.

Day 3

I will start prioritising student feedback in the class, ask them what they enjoyed, what they didn't or what they did not understand well. After going over all the aspects of being an effective teacher, the main point that stood out was being student centred learning and to me that means 'what's in the best interest of the students' and sometimes we forget that includes hearing back from the students, hearing how the students feel or what they think.

Day 4

One thing I am going to try incorporating in my daily practice is fairness. Being more fair in my decision making, making sure my decisions are not dangerously impacting my students and if a student or group of students are affected even just slightly because there will always be someone or people affected, every decision has a cost. In line with this, I have to be sure that the same students are not affected, in the same way or a new way again, by a decision.

Day 5

I thought the popcorn activity we did at the end of class was a fun way to get students to answer questions in class. I will be trying out and I can see that it is something that my younger students will enjoy. It can be a way for me to assess my students knowledge on a daily basis; and can even be a form of student reflection.

Day 6

I will definitely be incorporating more daily assessments in my teaching practice. This does not include any type of summative assessment, nothing formal or that needs marking; it is simply checking what the students know, getting their feedback and that could be through asking them questions or the exit ticket strategy - asking students to write down one thing they have learned or one question they might have about the lesson.
